A fetching stay in Yamba
'Actually dog friendly'.
Two-year-old Aussie Shepherd, Sedona, and her 'dog mum', Jessica, were blown away by just what was on offer during a stay at BIG4 Saltwater @ Yamba Holiday Park in NSW.
They recount the many highlights in this insightful Q&A.
Tell us about your accommodation
We were lucky enough to stay in one of the Figtree Cabins, and it did not disappoint.
Not only was there an outdoor fireplace to keep us warm after sunset, but the cabin was also equipped with a mighty strong heater/aircon to keep us all nice and toasty through the night.
Now, imagine waking up and seeing the sunrise from your window and then being able to walk towards the Clarence River to watch it reflect off the water. Not to mention the kangaroos and wallabies silhouetted in the marshlands beside us.
I cannot emphasise enough how peaceful early mornings are at this park.
How did you find your experience?
To sum it up, we will definitely be returning to BIG4 Saltwater @ Yamba. The staff and location were amazing, the fellow travellers were friendly and respectful, and most importantly this park was actually dog friendly.
We never felt out of place walking around with our pup. There was even a dog wash if they get dirty! They have thought of it all.
Also, in a very nice touch, the dogs received some Schmackos treats from reception when we were checking in.
What other pet-friendly facilities were on offer?
Many times, when I read that accommodation has a dog park, I don’t think much of it because it is usually just a small, fenced-in patch of grass. However, this park delivered!
This was the nicest agility-style dog wonderland I’ve seen in a long time. Weave poles, tunnels, ramps...you name it, they’ve got it.
What surprised you most about your stay?
I think most dog owners can relate to finding 'dog-friendly accommodation' that really isn't dog friendly at all.
So, the fact that you are allowed your dogs inside the cabins, they are allowed to walk around nearly the entire park, and there is a designated off-leash dog zone just makes me really happy for all my fellow dog owners.
How often do you travel with Sedona?
We take Sedona absolutely everywhere, but as for big trips I’d say every week or so we do a bit of a getaway.
Our last big adventure was driving from the Gold Coast all the way down to Warrnambool in Victoria, so just a casual 20hr drive!
What’s your top tip for travelling with a pet?
Here are three that have saved us...
- You must have a seat cover for your car. The amount of sand and dirt our doggos bring in is shocking. We have one from Stylish Hound that has held up for a few years now.
- Bring wipes. Non-scented wet wipes will save you if your dog gets really dirty and you can’t wash them. Or in the unfortunate event of an upset tummy!
- Leave lots of extra time for more stops. I’m not just talking about bathroom breaks. I’m talking about mindful moments where you can really take a beautiful view or watch the sunset.
What essential items do you pack when travelling with Sedona?
Her doggo bed, her favourite leash and collar set, her dinner, and a collapsible bowl for the thirsty gal. And my camera because she’s the most photogenic girl I know.
