The best places to enjoy snow in Australia
Ski, snowboard, and photograph Australia at its snow-filled best this winter. Tourism Australia has the lowdown on the best places to enjoy snow in Australia.
Winter in Australia is unique. While the sun shines on beaches in the north, it’s snow time down south. NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania are full of activities and adventures while snow is in abundance.
It’s the perfect time to slide down the slopes, take a walk through the pristine wilderness, and revel in the festivities that only a snowy winter brings.
The snow season comes alive at ski resorts across NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania. If you’re keen to hit the slopes in NSW, be sure to check out Thredbo, Perisher, Jindabyne, Alpine Way, Charlotte Pass, and Mt Selwyn as well as Canberra.
Where to stay: NRMA Jindabyne Holiday Park.
BIG4 parks with campfires and fire pits
BIG4 parks that permit camp fires and/or fire pitsIn Victoria, head to Mt Buller, Mt Stirling, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Lake Mountain, Mt Baw Baw, and Dinner Plain. Further south in Tasmania are the ski areas of Ben Lomond, accessible from Launceston, and Mt Mawson.
Although all Australian ski fields have plenty to offer beginner skiers through to those more advanced, there is also a lot more to do without having to strap into skis and snowboards.
Spot the wildlife
Winter is a great chance to spot some of Australia’s native wildlife as they roam the land, even in these cooler conditions. Visitors can spot kangaroos jumping through the snow in Kosciuszko National Park in NSW and wombats frolicking around Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.
Get among the snow in Victoria
Victoria is home to many tours that provide unique offerings in the snow. Visitors can experience Australia’s winter wonderland first-hand by building a snowman, riding a toboggan, or just to have a chance to get among the ice. Experience the snow from the comfort of a heated ex-Australian Army Land Rover with Tour of Duty Bright.
Alternatively Wildlife Tours has a one-day mountain tour to the Lake Mountain region, located only two hours from Melbourne. It visits Stevenson Falls in Marysville, the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery, and enjoys hot chocolate and coffee in the snow.
Where to stay: BIG4 parks in Victoria's High Country region or day trip from Melbourne.
Hiking at Cradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain’s snow-capped peaks are an impressive sight synonymous with winter in Tasmania. Adventure seekers can take in this view intimately by lacing up their hiking boots and setting foot on the Overland Track.
While the area is known year round for its scenic walks, witnessing winter in this part of Australia is unforgettable.
Day trip from: BIG4 Tassie Getaway Parks Ulverstone or BIG4 Tassie Getaway Parks Stanley.
Snowshoeing in Thredbo and Mt Kosciuszko
Far beyond the ski fields and into the winter silence are snowshoe tours. Navigate through the thick, open, and icy terrain with your guides on specially made snow shoes.
Thredbo runs tours through their back country taking in the scenic surrounds, while K7 Kosciuszko Adventures runs tours through Mt Kosciusko, giving visitors the chance to set up picnic lunches on top of the Crackenback Range.
With no previous experience required, snowshoeing is the perfect activity if you don’t consider yourself a skier.
