Tropical North Highlights

The list of eye-popping sights in Tropical North Queensland is gigantic, and two World Heritage sites are not to be missed. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef on the planet and opportunities for exploration are boundless. The Wet Tropics of Queensland incorporates the Daintree Rainforest, the world’s oldest-surviving tropical rainforest, which is rich in Aboriginal culture.

Two key destinations either side of Cairns allow you to take in a rare sight where this rainforest meets the reef. In a northerly direction is the alluring village of Cape Tribulation and south of Cairns is Mission Beach; it consists of four enticing beach villages connected by a 14km stretch of golden sand.

Cairns is a superb Tropical North Queensland base; a vibrant city offering a raft of cultural and family-friendly attractions and within arm’s reach of prized features. Be sure to journey along the Kuranda Scenic Railway, which travels from Cairns to Kuranda and showcases extraordinary scenery.

Kuranda, the ‘village in the rainforest’, is the gateway to the Atherton Tablelands and provides endless appeal. Take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and witness the incredible Barron Falls.

Port Douglas is another crowd-pulling village in Tropical North Queensland and oozes a relaxing vibe. A stroll along radiant Four Mile Beach is a must.

Further north, historical Cooktown is a Tropical North Queensland gem. Several attractions indulge in the town’s link to Captain Cook, and this is a great base for adventures within the remote Cape York area.

Myriad national and conservation parks enhance the radiance of Tropical North Queensland. Malanda Falls Conservation Park and Millstream Falls National Park provide wonderful examples of gushing water features. Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park is another highlight.
