Warwick
Sitting gracefully on the banks of the Condamine River, historic Warwick is known for its roses and rodeo and features some of Queensland's finest sandstone buildings. From here it is easy to explore the friendly villages and small towns of the Southern Downs.
Settled more than 150 years ago, Warwick is rich in heritage and offers a number of well-preserved churches, cottages, railway stations, schools and monuments, each with its own story. One of the most fascinating is that of Thomas Byrnes. The talented son of Irish immigrants, he rose to become Queensland Premier in 1898, but tragically died of pneumonia after just five months in office. His imposing statue stands proudly in the main street.
Two must-see attractions along the heritage trail are the Warwick and District Historical Museum, where visitors can discover life from the 1890s to the 1950s, and Abbey of the Roses. Formerly Our Lady of Assumption Convent, it served for nearly 100 years as the heart of the Catholic community in Warwick and today is a popular boutique guest house and function centre.
In keeping with its nickname the Rose City, Warwick is full of beautiful rose plots. They can be enjoyed at the Visitor Information Centre, the Warwick Art Gallery, the Warwick and District Historical Society Museum, and on various plots approaching the city from the north.
Warwick is also known as the Horsepower Capital of Australia. It is home to the famous Warwick Rodeo held each October, as well as Morgan Park Raceway, a premier motorsport venue hosting drag racing and other top-level competitions. The city's equestrian facilities have also hosted the Polocrosse World Cup in 2003, 2007 and 2019.
Nature lovers can enjoy easy access to Main Range National Park, including the Goomburra section, and the scenic Queen Mary Falls, making Warwick a destination that combines history, culture, sport and natural beauty.
