Blake Botanic Reserve
National Parks and Reserves
Blake Botanic Reserve is part of a natural lagoon system, a distinctive feature of Deniliquin, which meanders through the township. The lagoons eventually flow into the Edward River (Kolety), an anabranch of the Murray River (Mile).
In 1985 local residents together with the Southern Riverina Field Naturalists through the leadership of the then president, Graham Harrington, and Deniliquin Municipal Council commenced work revegetating the site with local native plant species. The project sought to create examples of the different plant community types found in the southern Riverina to provide an educational experience for locals and tourists alike. The Reserve is comprised of various basic soil types and associated vegetation which support beneficial birds and insects. They are River Red Gum; White Cypress Pine; Grey Box; Black Box; Boree and Saltbush.
More recently the site has been used to showcase traditional First Nations Scar Trees practices.
Information is available at the Deniliquin Visitor Information Centre, including Tom Wheller's bird guide.
